The construction of this magnificent building began on January 6th 2004, and the exterior structure was completed by October 1st 2010. The building was officially opened on January 4th 2010 and was considered as a part of new development called the ‘Downtown Dubai’.

The idea of constructing the building is based on government’s decision. The intention was to expand from an oil based market to a tourism based one. The architectural designing of the towers is done by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago. Adrian Smith worked on the project as the chief architect and Bill Baker worked as chief structural engineer. The construction of tower was handled by Al Ghurair group of Investment.

The Burj Khalifa was projected and constructed with an intention to put Dubai on the map. The building is an attraction of a mix-use development, which includes 30,000 homes, 09 hotels, 03 hectares of parkland, 19 residential towers, Dubai Mall and a 12 hectare of manmade Burj-Khalifa Lake. The tower was initially known as Dubai Tower or Burj Dubai, but was later renamed as Burj Khalifa in the honor of the Abu Dhabi ruler.

The Dubai Fountain

It is one of the worlds biggest ever fountain set on the manmade Burj Khalifa Lake. The fountain system was designed by WET enterprises, California. The entire designing and construction of this breathtaking choreographed fountain system has cost over 800 million AED. It has 6600 lights, 25 colored projectors and shoots water up to 500 ft.

Observation Deck

An observation deck named as AT THE TOP is constructed on the 124th floor (1483 ft height) of Burj Khalifa. Of course, it was the highest observation deck in the world when it was opened. However, it was surpassed in December 2011 by the observation deck of Canton Tower (1601 ft height). Well, later Burj Khalifa opened a new observation deck on 148th floor (1821 ft height) and was once again a record holder. The observation deck located on 124th floor has an electronic telescope, which allows visitors to see the surrounding landscapes.
